How to build a garden room or gazebo
A garden room or gazebo can offer a peaceful haven in your garden, but building it properly requires some reflection. Where should the garden room be located? How do you intend to use your new garden room or gazebo, and how ambitious are you planning for the building to be? We offer guidance to help you along the way!
When it comes to these cozy outdoor buildings, there are many possibilities and lots of different types of garden rooms and gazebos, depending on what you are looking for exactly. Do you want a pleasant place to drink coffee with your family during the warm months of the year? Or would you like to extend the summer season? Would you like to be able to use your garden room or gazebo as an orangery in the winter? There are certainly plenty of possibilities. Below we list some of the things to consider when building a garden room or gazebo.
Planning is key
Garden rooms are often relatively small, and building regulations will not usually apply as long as your planned garden room, conservatory or gazebo is less than 10 square metres of floor area in NZ. It is also important that your garden room is not planned to contain sleeping accommodation. You can even build a larger structure of between 15 to 30 square metres as long as it is at least one metre from the boundary of your land, or is built from non-combustible materials. If you are in doubt, contact your Local Planning Authority for assistance.
Make a sketch and choose a model
Now comes the fun part of the planning! Consider what you want to use your garden room for and what you need. Should it be a simple gazebo with just a roof or canopy? Or do you want windows and a fully enclosed space? One advantage of garden rooms is that there is often very good light from all directions, so you do not have to worry about it facing any particular direction.
You may also consider suitable spots to place your garden room or gazebo. Is there already a stable plot available, or do you need to ensure that the garden room has a good foundation and anchorage? It may also be a good idea to raise your garden room off the ground slightly to avoid the onset of rot.
Build from scratch or order ready-made?
Depending on how much you want to do yourself and how ambitious your planned garden room is, you have the opportunity to influence the time and money that you spend. If you do not wish to do everything yourself, there are many different ready-made kits to choose from, which offer varying degrees of difficulty. Another option is to bring in professional help, but keep in mind that this will most likely cost more.
Time to decorate!
When construction of your garden room or gazebo is finished, it’s time to create that cozy garden cottage you’ve always dreamed of! For a home-like and pleasant atmosphere, you can use textiles, such as light, thin curtains (if you have chosen to include windows), lots of cushions to sit on and tablecloths or wall hangings. It may also be an idea to decorate your garden room using plants. For example, you could wind roses along the pillars give a romantic and dreamlike impression, inviting you and your family to spend long hours in the garden room!
